Reflections on Self-Reflection

Pierre Gaite

Reflections on Self-Reflection

Self-reflection

“Meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions, and motives.”

– Oxford Dictionary (2016)

In a range of education contexts, including language teaching, reflection on one’s practice is considered an important part of professional development – from CELTAs to PGCEs, self-reflection forms an integral part of teaching qualifications. It is perhaps surprising, then, that more attention is not paid to encouraging student reflection in the language classroom, as it is a well-recognised tool for self-understanding and improvement.

Students and trained educators alike can be remarkably taken aback by the simple question “What have you just learnt?”  This is because learning is often a semi-subconscious process; we naturally incline towards focusing on the content itself rather than how or the very fact that we are learning it. Asking a person “What have you just learnt?” is to ask them to suddenly shift their mental gaze inwards, to draw a connecting line between the subject of study and the human being studying it.

For many this process does not come naturally, yet it is a skill of immense value: consciously recognising our learning means gaining a greater control over it, combining our knowledge with the realisation of what we know in order to solidify our understanding. Students who are regularly made to engage in this practice tend to make larger strides in their learning journey, and on surer feet. Routinely taking even five or ten minutes at the end of class to refocus students’ minds in this way can be enough to enhance the value of a lesson. The number of activities used for these lesson ‘plenaries’ are legion, but it can be as simple as merely asking students “What have we learnt today?”, “How have we learnt it?” and “Why is this important?” In doing so we can not only demonstrate the success of a lesson, but also raise students’ awareness of the value of careful introspection.

Recommedations

We would like to recommend an album entitled Nos Sobran Los Motivos by Spanish poet, singer and composer Joaquín Sabina.

All lyrics are entirely written in Spanish and would be suitable for adults with an intermediate Spanish language level or above.

Our film recommendation this month goes to La Niña De Tus Ojos (The Girl of Your Dreams), a historical drama set in 1938 when Spain is being torn apart by civil war.

Written and directed by Fernando Trueba, this film would be suitable for intermediate and advanced Spanish language users and can be enjoyed with English subtitles for additional support.

El Rincón de lo Bello

Welcome to our section in Spanish, dedicated to all that is beautiful.
In this Issue, we are delighted to share with our readers El Vals de los Enamorados y Unidos hasta Siempre by Miguel Hernández, from his collection of poems entitled Cancionero y Romancero de Ausencias (1938-1941).

El Vals de los Enamorados y Unidos hasta Siempre

No salieron jamás
del vergel del abrazo.
Y ante el rojo rosal
de los besos rodaron.

Huracanes quisieron
con rencor separarlos.
Y las hachas tajantes
y los rígidos rayos.

Aumentaron la tierra
de las pálidas manos.
Precipicios midieron,
por el viento impulsados
entre bocas deshechas.
Recorrieron naufragios,
cada vez más profundos
en sus cuerpos sus brazos.

Perseguidos, hundidos
por un gran desamparo
de recuerdos y lunas
de noviembres y marzos,
aventados se vieron
como polvo liviano:
aventados se vieron,
pero siempre abrazados.

The Iberian wolf is a subspecies of grey wolf that inhabits the forest and plains of northern Portugal and northwestern Spain. It is estimated that the total Iberian population is 2,000 – 2,500 wolves.

Its distictive features include white marks on the upper lips, dark marks on the tail and a pair of dark marks in its front legs that give it its subspecies name, signatus (“marked”).

Language TogetherSpanish Set 1 + English Set 1
by Germaine Choe http://languagetogether.net

Language Together - box-set1-englishLanguage Together - box-set1-spanish

The Language Together series of books is an effective resource for very young Spanish and English learners, incorporating content and a teaching methodology that is elegant in its simplicity.

Presentation and Layout

Physically, the books are well designed: they are a manageable length, their dimensions make them easy for young children to hold and use, and the entire set can easily fit into any shelving space. Moreover, the ratio between text and illustration is also well balanced, with a single line on each page providing one target word or phrase for children to learn.

Methodology

The books’ use of Spot Color Immersion Method™ is excellent, highlighting the target language on each page in the same colour as the object it denotes in the illustration, which enables learners to assimilate key vocabulary and phrases more quickly. In addition, the Sets have been specifically designed to enable parent participation, as the discrete inclusion of translations (English – Spanish) and online access to native speaker audio means that no prior knowledge of the target language is essential.

Illustrations

It is also impressive how the cheerful illustrations allow for a deeper engagement with the story, including small details and implications that parents and teachers can draw childrens’ attention to.

Content

The inclusion of idiomatic ‘fun phrases’ is also an intelligently calculated move, drawing as it does on the enthusiasm of young children who will want to repeat the phrases again and again in the context of their own lives, thus ensuring that they practice their language skills with little need for additional encouragement. Furthermore, content is delivered in the form of a straightforward narrative that children can easily follow, and it is commendable that the stories are underpinned by a clear set of values including family, fun, humour, and an interest in the world at large.

Overall, Language Together Spanish Set 1 and English Set 1 provide children with an introduction to Spanish and English that is both light and fun, immersive and effective, and which would fit neatly into any language curriculum.

Our film recommendation this month goes to Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside), a fact-based story of Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic man who petitions the Spanish government for his right to die.

Directed, co-written and co-produced by Spanish film-maker Alejandro Amenábar, this film would be suitable for intermediate and advanced Spanish language users and can be enjoyed with English subtitles for additional support.

El Rincón de lo Bello

Welcome to our section in Spanish, dedicated to all that is beautiful.

In this Issue, we are delighted to share with our readers Poem 6

by Pablo Neruda, from his beautiful collection of love poems

entitled Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair (1924).

Poema Seis

― Pablo Neruda

Recommendations

We would like to recommend WordReference.com as a free online multilingual dictionary:

Today, I have three main goals with WordReference.  First, continue to create free online bilingual dictionaries for English to many other languages.  I strive to offer excellent translations for “all” English words, terms, idioms, sayings, etc. into “all” languages.  This is a huge goal and will take time.  There are many languages and creating quality dictionaries is neither cheap nor quick.  Beyond English, I plan to do the same for Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.  Second, provide the world’s best language forums, dedicated to relatively serious discussion about the meanings and translations of words, terms and expressions in many languages.  Third, continue to innovate to produce the best website and reference tools for the world.
